🚨 Flash Floods Hit Texas Hill Country
Over the July 4th weekend, strong flash floods hit the Texas Hill Country, especially near Kerrville, Ingram, and Hunt. The Guadalupe River overflowed after 12 inches of rain fell very quickly on Friday morning.
As of now, more than 82 people have died, and many others are still missing. Sadly, 28 of the victims were children from summer camps near the river.
💧 Why Was the Flood So Bad?
The flood happened very fast during the night while most people were asleep. The land in that area cannot absorb water well, so the rain just ran across the ground and into the river.
In just 45 minutes, the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet (8 meters), which is extremely dangerous.
🔍 Search and Rescue Still Going On
Rescue teams and volunteers are working hard to find missing people. Some children and a camp counselor are still missing from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp.
Officials say the number of missing is not confirmed because many tourists were visiting for the holiday.
❓Were People Warned in Time?
Many people say they did not receive any flood warnings until it was too late. Some described the flood as a "pitch black wall of death."
Officials are now facing questions about why warnings came so late, around 4 a.m.. Some residents say they only noticed how dangerous it was by 5:20 a.m.
🌎 Could Climate Change Be a Reason?
Experts say that climate change may be making storms worse by allowing the atmosphere to hold more water. This can lead to heavier rainfall in a short time.
🏚️ Damage and Cleanup Efforts
The floods destroyed homes, washed away cars, and erased entire campgrounds. Officials say it may take a long time to clean and rebuild the area. Some people may never return.
🙏 Community Help and Support
Local churches, like Hunt Baptist Church, are giving out food and supplies. People from all over Texas are sending donations to help those who lost everything.
🏛️ President Trump to Visit
President Donald Trump said he will probably visit the flood-affected area on Friday to see the damage and talk to families.
